If these guys have patented the most basic form of artificially created life, then any future artificially created life is subject to patent lawsuits.
This guarantees that progress will be stymied by lawsuits and payment negotiations, not any limits to our scientific understanding.
Of course, I'm completely ignoring all movie evidence to date suggesting that messing with mother nature is bad :)
